“Shalom Y’all” From the Magic City

    By Samantha Dubrinsky,
    BJF Director of Community Impact
If you’ve lived in Birmingham for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard or seen the phrase “Shalom, y’all!” This welcoming saying is something we at the Birmingham Jewish Federation genuinely mean. We strongly feel that one of our purposes is to be engaging and welcoming to all Jewish community members, even those who have just moved to Birmingham.
Because of our dedication to this belief, we created an initiative called Shalom Birmingham. Shalom Birmingham is how we welcome new-comers to our Jewish community – whether a person has lived in Birmingham their whole life and never been involved or is just moving to town.
To take Shalom Birmingham to the next level and really capture all that our community has to offer, we have put together a magazine called Jewish Birmingham that, at a glance, offers information on all the Jewish institutions in Birmingham, as well as ways to get involved, some of the Federation’s initiatives and perspectives on Birmingham’s broader community.
If you or someone you know needs more information on our community, please reach out to me at samd@www.bjf.org to receive a copy of our new Jewish Birmingham magazine. Lately, our Jewish community has been saying “Shalom, y’all” to a lot of new people, but we are always looking for ways to be more inclusive of all age groups and all levels of desired engagement.
